Steward, March 9, 1916." Theophilus Gould Steward of the A. M. E. Church was made chaplain to the 25th Colored Cavalry in 1891. The donor of this book was Steward''s second wife, Susan Maria Smith McKinney, a physician, the first African-American woman to graduate from medical school in the United States.
