first edition of one of the best works on the Negro in America''s military up to and including the period of the Buffalo Soldiers. Inscribed by the author''s wife "To Miss G. P. Putnam from S. M. Steward, March 9, 1916." Theophilus Gould Steward of the A. M. E. Church was made chaplain to the 25th Colored Cavalry in 1891. The donor of this book was Steward''s second wife, Susan Maria Smith McKinney, a physician, the first African-American woman to graduate from medical school in the United States.
